Ronan is a University Lecturer (Assist. Prof.) in the Science and Technology of Manufacturing based at the Institute for Manufacturing, Department of Engineering since 2013. He leads the Fluids in Advanced Manufacturing research group, which contains the Inkjet Research Centre as one of its core research initiatives. Prior to this, he completed his MEng (Chemical Engineering with European Studies) at the University of Edinburgh. He then joined Unilever R&D, where his final role was Process Technology Manager, leading the scale up work for a range of deodorant/antiperspirant innovations from lab to pilot and factory scale. He completed his PhD in the field of polymeric structure self-organisation at the School of Chemistry and the Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN) in Trinity College Dublin. His research group focuses on fluids and soft matter research, combining research into novel materials and devices with exploration of their manufacturing challenges, to drive effective scale-up of emerging technologies. His research group focuses on understanding fluids, colloids and interfaces and developing the next generation of production processes for personalised medicine, biosensing, functional coatings and inkjet printing. In inkjet specific research the group examines fundamental work such as how aerodynamic effects become increasingly important when printing at high speeds, as well as more application-focused research such as printing devices and functions direct to 3D shapes.
